Guitar theory for metal: make it make sense
Music theory doesn’t have to be boring or complicated, and it definitely shouldn’t kill your creativity.
In this chapter of Metal Riffs & Licks, you’ll learn a simple, practical approach to theory that actually helps you:
- Write better riffs and solos
- Know which chords and notes naturally fit together
- Improvise with more confidence
- Break the “rules” when it sounds right
Let me be straight with you:
I don’t sit around thinking about theory when I’m writing or playing. Most of the time, I go by feel and trust my ears.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t learn the basics.
Theory is just a tool, not a box to trap your playing in. The goal here is to let theory serve you:
- Use it when you’re stuck
- Use it when you want to understand why something sounds so good
- Use it to open up new ideas, not shut them down
Whether theory has always confused you or you just want a clearer way to apply it to metal, this is where it starts to make sense.
Take the next step inside the Academy
If you want to connect the dots even more and see how theory actually fits into your riffs and solos, there are a couple of next steps inside the Jason Stallworth Guitar Academy:
- Simple Guitar Theory gives you the core concepts in plain English, focused on how to actually use them in your writing and playing.
- Lead Guitar Apprentice and Melodic Soloist show you how to apply those ideas to real leads, phrases, and melodic concepts so your playing sounds more intentional and expressive.
All of these courses, and everything else I’ve created, are included with your Academy membership.
💬 “I tried another course that was all campfire chords — not my thing. Jason’s lessons had me playing real metal riffs within weeks. 100% best decision I’ve made.”
